Auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s are set kick off massive jewelry auctions in what could be a record week of sales. Sotheby’s has the royal jewels of the Bourbon-Parma family including pieces owned by Queen Marie Antoinette which is being made public for the first time in 250 years. Christie’s is selling the “Pink Legacy” diamond which could go for as much as $50 million. The diamond comes to market from the Oppenheimer family, who ran DeBeers for many generations until recently selling their stake in the business to a mining company called Anglo American for $5.1 billion in 2012. There’s plenty of global liquidity out there right now to bid up prices for these sought after pieces.
